Since the introduction of Viro's combinatorial patchworking in the 70s, various combinatorial techniques have been used in the study of real algebraic varieties. In my talk, I will present "real phase structures on tropical manifolds" as an attempt to generalize these methods. It turns out that these structures are essentially equivalent to oriented matroids, a class of well-studied objects in combinatorics.
